Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA)
Texas is launching a new education program called Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) beginning in the 2026–2027 school year. This page is here to help St. Patrick families understand the basics and find the official application information when it becomes available.
This is a resource page only—TEFA is a state program (not run by the parish), and eligibility or funding is not guaranteed.
What is TEFA?
TEFA is a Texas program that may provide eligible families with state-funded education dollars to use toward approved educational expenses.
Depending on eligibility and the child’s educational setting, TEFA funds may be used for things like:
- Private or Catholic school tuition and fees
- Homeschool materials and curriculum
- Tutoring and academic supports
- Educational therapy or services (when approved)
- Textbooks and supplies (when approved)
Who might TEFA impact?
TEFA may be relevant for families who:
- Have children in PreK–12
- Are considering Catholic school or other private school
- Are homeschooling or using a non-traditional educational approach
- Have a child who may qualify for additional supports (including some disability-related services)
Key dates
- Program begins: 2026–2027 school year
- Applications: Expected to open February 2026 (state timeline)

Important things to know (read this before you get too excited)
- Funding is limited and may not be available to every applicant.
- TEFA may use priority categories if applications exceed available funds.
- TEFA is managed by the State of Texas, not by St. Patrick Parish.
- Always rely on official program guidance for eligibility, documents needed, and deadlines.
